Sunan at-Tirmithiy

Abul-Ḥawrā' as-Sa'dī narrated that he asked al-Ḥasan Ibn-'Alī, "What have you memorized from the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him?" He said, "I memorized from the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, 'Forsake that which raises your doubts for that which does not; for indeed, truthfulness [brings] tranquility, and falsehood [brings] doubt (1).'" 1. (1) There is a story behind this ḥadīth. When he was asked what he had memorized of the words of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, al-Ḥasan Ibn-'Alī narrated that he had once taken one of the dates collected to be given for charity, and put it in his mouth. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, then took it out of his mouth and put it back among the rest of the dates saying, "We do not eat [the food collected for] charity." This serves as a reminder that one should strive to remain in a state of vigilance when it comes to doubtful matters. Click on ḥadīth to read more
